ABOUT ALAN JOHN ROSS

English poet and editor whose first collection of poems, The Derelict Day, was published in 1947. Also a nonfiction author and journalist, he published numerous works on the subject of cricket, including Australia 63 and Ranji: Prince of Cricketers.

He lived in Calcutta, India until age seven; afterwards, he studied at an English boarding school and excelled in art, French poetry, and cricket.

He left St. John's College, Oxford, to join the Royal Navy. He narrowly escaped death while serving on The HMS Onslow in 1942.

He married Jennifer Fry, heir to the Fry chocolate company, in 1949. The couple had a son in 1953.

He and Keith Douglas were both British wartime poets who served in the military.
