ABOUT ALFRED ROBERTS

Mayor of Garantham whose daughter Margaret would become the British Prime Minister. He was also a lay preacher, grocer, and alderman.

His bad eyesight precluded him from joining the family trade, shoemaking and also kept him out of the Great War.

During the Second World War he was Chief Welfare Officer, directing civil defence.

He was married twice and had two children

His daughter Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister in 1979
