She studied broadcast journalism and sociology at university and got her start in the entertainment industry in broadcasting at CNN. She worked as a production assistant on a number of series, including So You Think You Can Dance , before transitioning to acting.

She grew up in North Carolina. Her family is of Jamaican descent. She has two older siblings.
