Famous for Aspero Mundo, Grado Elemental, and numerous other works, this important 20th-century Spanish poet won multiple honors, including the Federico Garcia Lorca Poetry Prize, the Reina Sofia Iberoamericas Prize, and the Principe de Asturias Prize.

Six years after earning a law degree from the University of Oviedo, he published his debut, critically-acclaimed poetry volume.

For two decades, he was a professor at the University of New Mexico.

He was born and raised in Oviedo, Spain. He later lived in both Madrid, Spain and New Mexico, U.S.A.

For his second full-length poetic work, Grado Elemental, he was awarded the Antonio Machado Prize for Poetry.
