Anna Johnson Gates
ABOUT ANNA JOHNSON GATES
American politician and suffragette who was the first woman elected to the West Virginia Legislature. While in the legislature, she served on the education and Prohibition and temperance committees.
She was active in professional women's clubs and organizations in her area, including the Women’s Democratic Executive Committee.
She volunteered with the Red Cross during World War II.
She was married twice, first to Harry Gates and then to Tom Gates.
She attended the 1932 National Democratic Convention as a delegate when Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated for President.
