ABOUT ANNE MOODY

Famous for her memoir Coming of Age in Mississippi (1968), this African-American writer went on to pen a work titled Mr. Death: Four Stories (1975). Active in the Civil Rights Movement, she worked for the Congress of Racial Equality; the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; and the NAACP.

After briefly attending Natchez Junior College on an athletic scholarship, she received a bachelor's degree from Tougaloo College.

She wrote, but never published, a sequel to her famous memoir titled Farewell to Too Sweet.

Born in Mississippi to Elmira "Toosweet" Moody, Anne (born Essie May) Moody grew up with nine younger siblings. Before ending in divorce, her marriage to Austin Straus produced a son.

She and Richard Wright were both Mississippi-born, African American writers.
