American professional wrestler turned film and television actor who played roles in The Abbott and Costello Show, The Munsters as Strangler Murphy, and Oklahoma Crude.
Before serving in the Navy for a time, he won a world light-heavyweight championship in 1941. After arriving home and continuing wrestling for a time, his acting work started to take over.
He was the ring announcer in critically acclaimed boxing film Raging Bull.
He was married to Rosabelle Varga and had three sons and five grandchildren.
He appeared on the series Burke's Law which starred Gene Barry .
