ABOUT CARL SANDERS
Democrat who served as the 74th Governor of Georgia from 1963 to 1967. He most notably helped his state transition towards racial desegregation.
He received a scholarship to play football at the University of Georgia and he was a bomber pilot in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
He served on the Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia Senate during the 1950s.
He had two sons with his longtime wife Betty Bird Foy.
He was defeated by future president Jimmy Carter in the 1970 Georgia governor race.
