A bout with meningitis left him hospitalized and at the hospital he began listening to rock and country music daily on the radio.

To get a record deal with the popular Flip label, he claimed to have arranged and written several of Elvis Presley's songs.

He was born in a sharecropping community near Slayden, Mississippi.

Lux Interior of The Cramps learned his energetic, over-the-top vocal style from Feathers.
