Singer and songwriter who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.
She wrote poetry as a child and her first song was called "Dusty Skies," which was inspired by newspaper articles about the dusty storms on American prairies in the 1930s.
She was discovered after playing a song she wrote outside the Bing Crosby Enterprises building for Bing Crosby 's brother, Larry.
She was born to a cotton-broker father and a pianist mother and her maternal grandfather composed hymns. She was supposedly married for a short period of time, though the years are unknown.
