Texas-born entrepreneur who used the inheritance from his family's oil empire to invest in a successful coal business. He later served as CEO of Natural Resource Partners.

He was a linebacker on the University of Texas' football team.

He maintained close ties with the Coalition for Responsible Regulation, an organization known for its efforts to circumvent United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

His grandfather, Hugh Roy Cullen, was the founder of Quintana Petroleum, a prominent Texas oil company.

He was a major supporter of President George W. Bush , as well as a donor to the campaigns of numerous other Republican candidates.
