He had his best statistical season in 1981, playing for the Denver Broncos, as he threw for 3,195 yards and 21 touchdowns, compiling a 90.5 passer rating.

His father Ken served as a sergeant in WWII.

He played as a backup to quarterback Don Meredith in his first 4 years on the Dallas Cowboys.
