ABOUT DAMASO ALONSO
Spanish poet, critic, academic, and 1978 recipient of Spain's highest literary honor, the Premio Cervantes. His best-known works include Hijos de la ira (poetry) and Poesia de San Juan de la Cruz (literary criticism).
He studied philosophy, literature, and law in his younger years and later taught at several European universities.
He grappled, in his later poems, with his agnosticism and his search for God and meaning.
He was born and raised in Madrid, Spain.
He was associated with the artistic and literary community at the Residencia de Estudiantes, where Salvador Dali also lived and created art.
