ABOUT DION WILLIAMS
Linebacker turned pit crew member who became a NASCAR front-tire carrier, primarily for Jeff Gordon . Desired for his athleticism from playing football, he helped spearhead a movement of former college athletes joining pit crews in racing.
He played college football at Wake Forest and was a member of the Vikings during the 2004 preseason when his seventh career concussion prematurely ended his career.
He became the first black man to work with Jeff Gordon's team as well as the first to win a Sprint Cup Series, doing so as part of a crew.
He was one of six children born to Elmer and Yolanda Williams.
He's also worked on a team for Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
