Rose to fame as the founder of the real estate development brand The Irvine Company. He ended 2020 ranked #32 on the annual Forbes 400 list of the Richest People in America.

He earned a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration from the University of Washington . He subsequently served as an officer in the US Marine Corps.

He finished as #9 on The Sunday Times' 2009 list of the Green Rich List of wealthiest people to contribute to environmental causes. He has served on the board of trustees for Caltech and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

He has four total children with three wives.

He was featured alongside Elon Musk and Ray Dalio on the Forbes 400 in 2019 and 2020.
