British abstract and landscape poet and literary critic associated with The Movement in twentieth- century English poetry. His numerous publications include Events & Wisdoms, These the Companions, and To Scorch or Freeze.
He studied at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge and served in the British Navy in Russia during World War II.
He taught English at the University of Essex, Stanford University, and Vanderbilt University.
He grew up in a Baptist family in Yorkshire, England. He married Doreen John at the end of World War II.
His writing was influenced by the work of Ezra Pound .
