British intellectual author known for his work on the placebo effect and emotion.

He attended Southampton University and studied Spanish and linguistics and he later got his doctorate in philosophy from the London School of Economics.

He ran a "Utopia Experiment" in the Scottish highlands, which entailed a group of self-sufficient people abjuring technology and growing their own food for eighteen months.

He was born in Bristol in the United Kingdom, and later relocated to Cork.

He wrote extensively on the theories of Jacques Lacan .
