ABOUT ELAINE MASON
Nurse who became famous as the second wife of physicist Stephen Hawking . She met him in the 1980s when she took a job as his nurse and caregiver. She had been married to David Mason, an engineer who helped develop Hawking's speech synthesizer. She married Hawking in 1995 at the Cambridge Register Office.
She worked at an orphanage in Bangladesh.
She and Hawking filed for divorce in 2006, after 11 years of marriage. She was investigated by police over allegations she had physically and emotionally abused him during their marriage. She was not charged with any crimes.
She and her first husband had two sons. She was step-mother to Hawking's three children named Robert, Lucy and Timothy.
In the 2014 film The Theory of Everything , she was played by actress Maxine Peake .
