She studied at Johns Hopkins University and was also a fellow at the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop.

She has written over 30 novels including Swan Song. Her work has often been partnered with Nantucket Book Partners. She is also an Instagram star, online content creator, and social media personality who has over 190,000 followers on her elinhilderbrand Instagram account.

She married Chip Cunningham in 1995.
