A twentieth-century American writer, he is known for works such as The Islands, The Wayward Pilgrims, and Light on a Mountain. His novels are often set in New England.

He studied architecture at Harvard University before realizing he wanted to become a writer.

He was nominated for the National Book Award.

He married Huldah Potter Laird in 1927; together, they had three children.

He studied under poet Robert Frost .
