One of the first women to reach #1 on the country music charts, who released "I Let the Stars Get In My Eyes" in 1953.

She picked cotton on her family's farm until finding work as a background singer. She performed on Louisiana Hayride when she was nineteen years old.

She released the hit singles "Sure Fire Kisses" and "Looking Back to See."

She married singer Carl Smith in 1957.

She blazed the trail for many future #1 female artists, including Reba McEntire .
