ABOUT HART CRANE

American modernist and romantic poet known for White Buildings, The Bridge, and other complex works. His shorter pieces include "The River," "The Broken Tower," and "Repose of Rivers."

He was born in Ohio and dropped out of high school to move to New York City, where he worked for a time as a copywriter.

He committed suicide by jumping off a steamship into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

He had a sexual relationship with a woman named Peggy Cowley that inspired his poem "The Broken Tower." The majority of his romantic relationships, however, were with men.

He was inspired by the work of T.S. Eliot , and he modeled his epic poem, "The Bridge," on Eliot's famous work, "The Waste Land."
