ABOUT JACK BARNES
Forward for several soccer clubs in the interwar years, most notably Watford and Walsall.
Spending close to 10 years in professional football, he retired to work in a munitions plant in WW II.
He was the oldest surviving member of the Football League, and one of the last few professional footballers from the pre- WW II period.
Living to 99 years, he was able to meet his two grand-daughters and four great-grandchildren.
The Russian great goalkeeper Lev Yahin also lived through WW II, though he was only 12 when it broke out.
