Lead singer for the band Ultravox who also pursued a successful solo career, releasing the hit "If I Was."
He worked as an engineer after graduating Technical College.
He was in many different bands, including Salvation in 1972, The Rich Kids in 1977, Visage in 1978, Thin Lizzy in 1979, and Ultravox in 1979.
He had a daughter with Annabel Giles in March 1987.
He co-wrote the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" with Bob Geldof .
