Singer and songwriter known for the Southern soul-rock band JJ Grey & Mofro. He typically writes the band's songs and they reflect the region where he grew up in around Jacksonville, Florida. His group's first studio album was 2001's Blackwater. The album features songs like "Blackwater" and "Florida."

He met Daryl Hance while working for an air conditioning company. Their first band together was a rock band called Faith Nation. They later formed a funk band called Alma Zuma.

He attributed his band's strength to their stage performances rather than in the studio. His songs also include "Florabama," "99 Shades of Crazy" and "Your Lady, She's Shady." His song "The Sun is Shining Down" is featured in the closing scene of the season three finale of House of Cards .

His real name is John Higginbotham.
