He was a member of the United States Merchant Marine during World War II and the Korean War.

He was credited with starting the bodybuilding and fitness craze in the U.S.

He grew up with two brothers and a sister.

His gym was used for training by Arnold Schwarzenegger who thought of him as a friend and father figure.
