He debuted professionally for Ajax in 2012 after spending over a decade in the club's youth system.
He entered his first World Cup competition with the Dutch national team in 2014.
He was born in Velsen in the Netherlands.
He and midfielder Wesley Sneijder became teammates on the Netherlands national team.
