Johanna Reiss
ABOUT JOHANNA REISS
Dutch-Jewish memoir writer and children's author who wrote about her experience of the Holocaust. Her literary works include A Hidden Life and The Upstairs Room.
She was born in Winterswijk, The Netherlands. During the World War II years, she lived in hiding in the Dutch village of Usselo.
An acclaimed author, she received the Newbery Honor, the Jewish Book Council's award for children's literature, and the Buxtehuder Bulle Prize.
After settling in the United States in the 1950s, she wed Jim Reiss.
Like famous diarist Anne Frank , Reiss and her older sister lived in hiding from the Nazis during part of World War II.
