ABOUT JOHN BRAINE
Twentieth-century English writer whose best-known novels include Room at the Top, The Crying Game, and The Jealous God, all published during the 1950s and '60s. His later works include These Golden Days and The Two of Us.
He left school at the age of sixteen and later found work as a librarian.
He is associated with the Angry Young Men, a group of English novelists who expressed their disillusionment with British society.
With his wife Helen, he had four children.
Actor Laurence Harvey starred in the 1959 film adaptation of Braine's novel Room at the Top.
