English author who adapted many stage plays into novels, including Look Back in Anger, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and A Hard Day's Night.
He served during World War Two in the Royal Air Force, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and the Royal Marines, and then went into publishing.
He had a strong interest in science fiction and fantasy and wrote a number of occult stories while also editing several horror anthologies.
He was married to Jean Burke, with whom he co-wrote several works under a pseudonym.
His first adaptation was The Entertainer, which was made into a film starring Sir Laurence Olivier .
