American prelate of the Catholic Church who served as Archbishop of New York from 1984 until his death in 2000.
He served the US Navy in 1952 as a military chaplain during the Korean War.
He opposed condom distribution as an AIDS prevention measure because of the Church's teaching that all contraception is immoral and its use a sin.
He is the fourth of five siblings.
