ABOUT JOHN S. TANNER

Politician and member of the Democratic party from Tennessee who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1989 to 2011.

He was in active duty in the Navy from 1969 to 1972 and then served in Tennessee's House of Representatives until his election to Congress.

He voted with Republicans on social issues such as gun control and the death penalty, but voted with his party on the majority of issues, including education reform and affirmative action.

He met his wife Betty Ann Tanner while in college at the University of Tennessee.

He publicly endorsed Hillary Clinton 's 2008 presidential campaign.
