ABOUT JOHN WU
Twentieth-century Cardinal and Bishop who presided over the Catholic Church of Hong Kong.
Beginning in 1940, he was educated at the Ka-ying Seminary in his native China.
He responded to the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident by writing a letter to other Catholic figures that called for democracy and justice in China.
He was born and raised in China's Guangdong Province.
Pope Paul VI appointed Wu as Bishop of Hong Kong's Roman Catholic Diocese in 1975.
