In 1939, she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin.

She focused her studies on dress design and interior decoration, and both became huge parts of her business.

She is originally from Kansas City, Missouri.

She studied for one semester at the Kansas City Art Institute, where saxophonist Bobby Watson also attended.
