ABOUT JUNE JORDAN

Caribbean-American poet whose nearly thirty literary works include His Own where (1972), I Was Looking at the Ceiling and then I Saw the Sky (1995), and Some of Us Did Not Die (2003). Also known for her activism, she was an outspoken advocate of Civil Rights, women's rights, and LGBT equality.

She started writing poetry when she was just seven years old. She later attended Barnard College and published her debut literary work, a collection of children's poems entitled Who Look at Me, in 1969.

She received numerous honors and awards, including the Rockefeller grant for creative writing.

She was the Harlem-born daughter of Mildred Maud Jordan and Granville Ivanhoe. She married Michael Meyer in 1955. The couple divorced a decade later after becoming parents to a son, Christopher.

Toni Morrison was a fan and supporter of her work.
