An American experimental novelist, poet, playwright, and feminist, she is particularly known for Blood and Guts in High School, a best-selling metafictional work that explores social and political themes. For her short story, "New York City in 1979," she received the Pushcart Prize.

She graduated from Brandeis University and subsequently worked in New York as a file clerk, secretary, and stripper.
