She grew up in Canada and attended Ryerson University to study Fashion Communications. She moved to Berlin in her early 20s.

Apart from fashion, her blog Not Your Standard also features content on travel and interior design.

She is of Chinese and Italian descent. She says her mother identified her love of fashion at an early age after noticing how Kayla was constantly trying on other people's shoes.
