She won first prize in a talent contest in her youth, imitating the popular singers of the day; her award was a camera, but her father thought she stole it.
In her teenage years, she sang with Jimmy Dorsey's band, releasing the hit "Besame Mucho" and soon after becoming a hit on radio and a popular act in nightclubs.
She was married twice: her first marriage was to Clint Garvin, but it was annulled after less than a year.
For a short time early in her career she was the roommate of another young starlet, Dinah Shore .
