Irish folk musician best known as the founder of the group The Dubliners. Some of their popular songs were Seven Drunken Nights and The Black Velvet Band.
He played Gaelic football and soccer before leaving school at age thirteen.
He was diagnosed with a brain tumor after collapsing onstage in 1980.
He spent his last eight years with his German partner, Madeleine Seiler.
A 2005 documentary on his life called Luke Kelly: The Performer featured fellow Irish performers like Donovan .
