Madeline Defrees
ABOUT MADELINE DEFREES
American poet and Guggenheim Fellowship recipient known for Blue Dusk, Magpie on the Gallows, and other works. She received the Washington State Book Award for poetry for a 2006 collection entitled Spectral Waves.
She received degrees from Marylhurst College and the University of Oregon. She published her debut poetry collection, From the Darkroom, in 1964.
She joined the Catholic Sisterhood in 1936 and went by the name Sister Mary Gilbert until 1973.
She was born and raised in Oregon. She later taught in the Pacific University graduate creative writing program in her home state.
She was a contemporary of fellow American poet Amy Clampitt .
