ABOUT MALCOLM LOWRY
Most famous for his acclaimed mid-twentieth century novel Under the Volcano, Lowry is also remembered for his early work Ultramarine, as well as for his posthumously-published novel October Ferry to Gabriola.
His early experience in the shipping industry inspired much of the material in his first novel. Following his youthful nautical adventures, he earned an English degree from the University of Cambridge.
His masterwork, Under the Volcano, was ranked eleventh on the Modern Library's list of the Twentieth Century's best novels.
His brief first marriage to Jan Gabrial was accompanied by his temporary confinement in a mental institution. His second marriage to Margerie Bonner lasted from 1940 until his death in 1957.
After Lowry's passing, writer Earle Birney edited a collection of the deceased author's poems.
