British author and broadcaster who is best known for his 2001 book The Confessions of Mycroft Holmes: A Paper Chase.
He was born in Uganda because his father was teaching at Makerere University but he was raised in Wandsworth, London.
His book The Confessions of Mycroft Holmes: A Paper Chase won the Somerset Maugham Award in 2002.
His father Paul was a travel writing and novelist and his younger brother Louis is a journalist.
He won the Somerset Maugham Award four years before Zadie Smith did.
