ABOUT MARIO ABREU

Remembered for his vividly-colored, dreamlike images of objects, this Venezuelan painter and sculptor was the 1951 recipient of his country's National Prize for Painting and the 1975 winner of the National Prize for Plastic Arts.

He began drawing during his childhood years and later earned a scholarship to the Caracas School of Fine and Applied Arts.

During the 1950s and early 1960s, he lived and worked in Paris, France.

Born to Ramon Guerrero and Georgina Abreu in Turmero, Venezuela, he spent a portion of his childhood in the care of Amelia Borges, who served as his godmother.

He was a contemporary of fellow Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez .
