He published his first short story when he was a teenager and his first novel was published when he was 36.
He was awarded the Milner Award in 1993 for his exemplay work in children's literature.
He was born in Bath, Pennsylvania, but his family moved to Ludlow Ville, NY. He had eight older siblings.
