Children's fiction author who rose to fame in 1996 after publishing Junk, a young adult novel about teenagers in Bristol who use heroin.
He wrote The Cry of the Wolf, which won the Carnegie Medal in 1990.
His post-apocalyptic novels include 1999's Bloodtide and 2007's Bloodsong.
He was born in Twickenham, Middlesex.
His 2003 novel, Doing it, was adapted into the U.S. television series Life as We Know It, starring Lisa Darr .
