He attended Louisiana Tech University as a young man. His first songwriting hit was "More and More," which went to #1 and was performed by Webb Pierce .
He teamed up with June Carter to write Johnny Cash's classic single "Ring of Fire."
He grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana.
He met Hank Williams, Jr. as a boy of fourteen, carrying his guitar at the Louisiana Hayride.
