She started her professional career in 2015. She was working as a sex worker prior to becoming an actress.
She became the first transgender actress to win the Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Actor in 2015. She won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the San Francisco Film Critics Circle and the Independent Spirit Award in 2015
She is from Houston, Texas. She was raised by her grandparents.
