He and Reba McEntire co-founded Starstruck Entertainment, the music company that subsequently managed McEntire's country music career.

Before becoming a music manager, he had a career as a steel guitar player.

He was married to Elisa Gayle Ritter from 1973 to 1988 and Reba McEntire from 1989 to 2015. He and Reba welcomed a son, Shelby Steven McEntire Blackstock , in 1990.

He managed the career of pop singer Kelly Clarkson , who ended up marrying his son Brandon Blackstock .
