Swedish inventor who came up with the three-point seat belt to keep passengers from flying out of their cars during collisions.
He was working in aeronautics when Volvo recruited him to be their first chief safety engineer. Volvo was the first car to come standard with his three-point seat belt.
He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1999.
He had two children and two stepchildren with wife Maj-britt.
He and Laszlo Biro were two Europeans who were inducted into the U.S. National Inventors Hall of Fame.
