She began freelancing with New York magazine at the age of 19.

She also wrote for Law & Order .

She was born in Stillwater, Minnesota and is the daughter of writer Melody Beattie. Her father, David, worked as a counselor and died prematurely due to alcoholism. She had a brother, Shane, who died in a ski accident at the age of 14. in 2002, she married Michael Rapaport . They divorced in 2007, after having two children together.

Robert Kirkman wrote the comic version of The Walking Dead.
